Professor Tim Howell specializes in music analysis at the University of York's Department of Music, with expertise in twentieth-century Finnish music and temporal structures in composition. His research examines Nordic musical identity through composer studies including Sibelius, Saariaho, and Lindberg.
Major publications include analyses of Finnish modernism and musical timescales, exploring how temporal processes shape contemporary compositional practice. Current projects investigate Nordic musical characteristics through interdisciplinary lenses linking environmental and cultural influences.
Research has received support from the AHRC and Nordic Culture Fund. Teaching encompasses musical analysis from Stravinsky to contemporary composers, with PhD supervision focusing on twentieth-century repertoire.
