Dr. Rikard's research centers on cultural humility as a foundational practice in counseling, transformative learning through experiential education methodologies, and the integration of self-compassion with spirituality in therapeutic contexts. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist holding specialized certificates in Expressive Arts Therapy and Systemic Multicultural Counseling, she synthesizes clinical expertise from private practice, addictions treatment facilities, and community-based settings. Her work emphasizes relational and arts-based interventions for trauma resolution, particularly with children and adolescents, while advancing culturally responsive approaches across diverse populations.

She actively contributes to professional development through teaching core courses including Group Counseling (COUN 503), Theories of Counseling and Helping Professions (CNPY 502), and Internship in Counseling (COUN 591). Her leadership extends to former service as Continuing Education Chair for the North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, where she shaped continuing education standards for practitioners across the state.
