Dr. Thorsten Carstensen serves as Visiting Lecturer of German in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University during the 2024/25 academic year. Previously, he held the position of Associate Professor of German at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis before moving to the Netherlands.
His educational background includes an M.A. in German Literature from the University of Freiburg (2006) and a Ph.D. in German Studies from New York University (2012).
Carstensen's research integrates philological rigor with theories of modernity in the context of German literary studies. He is currently developing a book examining architectural knowledge within the modern German novel tradition, continuing his scholarly focus on narrative forms and literary history.
His teaching portfolio includes German Language and Culture (BA), Intercultural Communication (MA), Literature Today (MA), and Culture and Identity in the German Context courses.
