Thomas Schmidt

Professor Schmidt specializes in Greek language and literature with particular expertise in the Second Sophistic period, Plutarch studies, papyrology, and Byzantine scholiasts. His research combines meticulous textual analysis with historical contextualization to trace the evolution and transmission of Greek literary traditions across centuries. He approaches classical texts through both philological rigor and cultural-historical frameworks.

Currently teaching a seminar on Plutarch's Fragments for Bachelor and Master students, Professor Schmidt continues to contribute significantly to classical scholarship through his teaching and research at the University of Fribourg. His course scheduled for Spring 2026 demonstrates his ongoing active engagement in academic instruction.
