Georgios Xenis

Georgios Xenis is a Professor of Ancient Greek at the University of Cyprus's Department of Classics and Philosophy. He specializes in textual criticism, editorial practices of classical texts, and the study of ancient scholiasts. His career includes roles as Lecturer (2002–2006), Assistant Professor (2006–2011), and Associate Professor (2011–2018) before becoming full Professor in 2018.

Education: B.A. (Excellent, Valedictorian) in Greek Philology from the University of Athens (1993–1997), M.St. (Distinction) in Greek and Latin from the University of Oxford (1997–1998), and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Cyprus (1998–2001).

Research focuses on ancient scholia to Sophocles, papyrology, and editorial practices. Notable projects include critical editions of Sophoclean scholia funded by the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation. His work has been rated 'Category A – Excellent' in external evaluations.

Awards include the Academy of Athens Prize (2011) for his monograph on Sophocles' Electra scholia. He coordinates major research programs like 'The Ancient Scholia to Sophocles' Ajax' (2025–2027) and has supervised postdoctoral projects on Hipponax and iambic corpora.

Publications include six critical editions of ancient texts and numerous articles in leading journals like Classical Quarterly and Rheinisches Museum. He has also edited volumes such as Literature, Scholarship, Philosophy, and History (2015).
