Thomas Schmidt is an Honorary Professor at the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, University of Manchester. He has held prominent academic positions, including Dean of Music, Humanities and Media and Professor of Musicology at the University of Huddersfield (2017–2021), and Professor of Music at the University of Manchester (2012–2017).
His research spans pre-1600 music, instrumental compositions of the 18th–19th centuries (notably Mendelssohn and Mozart), musical editing, and the history of genres such as the motet, string quintet, and sonata. He has contributed to music philology and source studies.
