Associate Professor · Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction
University of AlabamaAbout
Thomas S. Tobin serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Alabama. His research centers on reconstructing paleoenvironmental conditions during Earth's major mass extinction events, particularly the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, using integrated geologic methodologies including stable isotope analysis and paleontological studies.
Education:
- B.A. in Geology from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN
- Ph.D. in Earth & Space Sciences from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Dr. Tobin specializes in analyzing carbon and oxygen isotopic values in carbonate and organic carbon to investigate paleoclimate dynamics during the K-Pg extinction. His fieldwork spans critical sites including the Antarctic Peninsula, Indian Subcontinent, and eastern Montana, with particular focus on ammonite paleoecology as key extinction victims. This multidisciplinary approach combines sedimentology, invertebrate paleontology, and geochemistry to unravel ancient environmental changes.
