Thomas Rug is a former Professor at the Art Faculty of Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (1993–2018), retiring in 2018. He studied Industrial Design at Burg Giebichenstein (1972–1978), specializing in surface and graphics, followed by a second course in Painting (1978–1980). Before his professorship, he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Weimar (1980–1988) and later as a teacher and artistic assistant at Burg Giebichenstein (1988–1992). His research interests span Industrial Design, graphic arts, painting, textile arts, and design strategies, with a focus on multimedia and interdisciplinary practices.
He received the Art Award of Saxony-Anhalt in 2011. Post-retirement, he has continued active participation in exhibitions and academic events, including solo/group shows in Bernau, Dresden, and Halle, and collaborations such as the ZUKÜNFTE – Material und Design von Morgen exhibition (2025). Upcoming events include sound installations, design anthropology talks, and exhibitions showcasing student and alumni work.
His career reflects a blend of artistic practice, education, and institutional contributions, with a strong emphasis on contemporary art and design innovation.
