Thomas Rietveld is a Researcher in the Wheeled Sports and Technology Research groups, affiliated with the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM.1.22). His work focuses on optimizing wheeling performance for wheelchair athletes through interdisciplinary approaches involving athlete physiology, wheelchair configuration, and environmental factors.
Education: BSc in Human Movement Sciences (University of Groningen, 2017), followed by a Master-PhD program centered on wheelchair tennis. Completed a 2019 internship at Loughborough University investigating surface and tyre pressure effects on wheelchair tennis performance.
Research Interests: Wheelchair athlete performance analysis, biomechanics of wheelchair propulsion, disability sport technology, and optimizing sport equipment for athletes with disabilities. His PhD thesis at University Medical Center Groningen (2019–2022) explored wheeling performance from athlete, wheelchair, and environmental perspectives.
