University of SouthamptonAbout
Professor Thomas Gernon is a Professorial Fellow (Research) at the University of Southampton, specializing in Earth's climate dynamics and tectonic processes. His research focuses on the interplay between solid Earth mechanisms and climate evolution, particularly continental breakup's impact on carbon cycles and surface processes. He holds a B.Sc. from University College Dublin and a Ph.D. from the University of Bristol under Prof. Sir Steve Sparks. Previously a Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin (2008-2009), he joined Southampton in 2009, becoming Associate Professor in 2016 and later achieving Turing Fellow accolades twice. He coordinates modules in structural geology, volcanic processes, and GIS, while supervising multiple PhD students in Earth sciences.
Current research projects include decoding ice-age cyclicity, fluvial sediment dynamics, and environmental monitoring for carbon storage. Notable collaborations involve the Alan Turing Institute and EU-funded initiatives. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and frequently presents at international conferences. His work bridges geoscience with emerging technologies through data sonification and interdisciplinary approaches.
