Thomas Cushman is the Deffenbaugh de Hoyos Carlson Professor in the Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College. His research bridges sociological theory, human rights, and post-communist cultural analysis. He has held visiting appointments at Harvard, Brandeis, and the University of London, and his work combines ethnographic fieldwork with policy engagement.

He has advised Bosnian leaders on post-war recovery and organized student internships at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
Cushman’s scientific recognition includes a Choice Outstanding Academic Book award and multiple fellowships. His recent publications, such as The Routledge Handbook of Human Rights (2011), reflect interdisciplinary collaborations. As a public intellectual, he co-founded the Academic Freedom Alliance and served on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (2019–2023).
