Thom Loyd

Thom Loyd is an Assistant Professor at Augusta University's Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, specializing in the Department of History, Anthropology and Philosophy. With a Ph.D. in European History from Georgetown University (2021), an AM from the University of Oxford (2013), and a BA from the University of Bristol (2012), he focuses on the global history of the former Soviet space, racial dynamics in non-capitalist societies, and intelligence history.

• Global Soviet history
• Racial formation in socialist systems
• Intelligence and espionage historiography
• Modern US-Soviet comparative frameworks
• Protest movements in Cold War contexts

Recent Scholarship examines Soviet internationalism, racial identity in Eastern Europe, and Ukrainian nationalization processes. His 2021 article on Soviet Blackness and 2022 analysis of Ukrainian migration challenge conventional narratives about race and ideology in non-Western contexts.
