Temba Middelmann is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing at Toronto Metropolitan University, working in the Department of Structural Determinants of Health from April 2024 to May 2025. His research integrates urban studies, public space, and arts-based practices to address health equity and community wellbeing.
He holds advanced degrees from the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Oxford, where he developed a multidisciplinary approach to structural inequalities in urban environments.
Middelmann's expertise spans public space dynamics, urban marginalization, and social cohesion, with extensive publications on history, heritage, homelessness, and energy transitions. He currently investigates how artistic practices—including painting, photography, and land art—contribute to healing processes in marginalized communities, drawing from his exhibited work across South Africa.
As part of the CERC team, he contributes to research streams on Social Determinants of Health, Indigenous Health, Disability, and Digital Health, focusing on translating findings into community benefits through the Knowledge Mobilization Hub.
