Taran Gujral

Taran Gujral is an Associate Professor in the Human Biology Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and an Affiliate Associate Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Washington. He is also a Member of the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center (IIRC) at Fred Hutch.

Dr. Gujral is a systems biologist who takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying cell-cell interactions, with a focus on tumor cells and their microenvironment. His research spans three major areas:

• Precision Oncology in Rare Cancers - developing new preclinical models using patient-derived 3D microtumors and computational approaches to identify therapeutic targets
• Signaling in the Tissue Microenvironment - optimizing procedures for maintaining organotypic tumor tissue to study cellular interactions
• Targeting Kinases with Network Pharmacology - developing computational tools to evaluate clinical applications of kinase inhibitors

His groundbreaking work revealed how cell-to-cell contact activates molecular pathways enabling cancer cells to resist chemotherapy, demonstrating the critical importance of tumor architecture. Dr. Gujral's lab integrates computer science, pharmacology, and cell biology to investigate tissue-specific signaling networks with special emphasis on rare cancers.

His innovative research has been featured in multiple high-impact studies including repurposing 'ineffective' drugs, identifying targets for fibrolamellar cancer, and developing 'cell death on a chip' technology for cancer biology.
