Tanja Winther is a Professor and Head of the Research Centre for Socially Inclusive Energy Transition (Include) at the University of Oslo. With a multidisciplinary background spanning social anthropology (Dr. polit., 2005), business administration (BI Oslo, 1995), and power engineering (NTNU, 1991), her work focuses on socio-cultural dimensions of energy systems. She has conducted fieldwork in Tanzania, Kenya, India, Malawi, and Norway.
Research Interests: Her scholarship examines inclusive energy transitions, energy poverty, gender-electricity interconnections, sustainable consumption, and socio-technical aspects of electrification. Key themes include justice in energy policy, gendered impacts of technology adoption, and cross-cultural analysis of energy practices.
Projects: Leads multiple initiatives including the FME-funded Include Centre (2020-2027) and PowerPoor (energy poverty in Norway). Former projects include DFID-funded EFEWEE (women's empowerment through electrification) and RCN studies on solar prosumers and energy-saving behaviors.
Teaching: Current courses include Socially Inclusive Energy Transition and Sustainable Energy Consumption. Previously developed curricula on Energy/Environment/Development and Cross-Cultural Environmental Perspectives.
Leadership: Board member for UiO:Energy (2017-2022) and Norad's EnPe program. External examiner for Durham University's Energy and Society program.
