Garvey's scholarship examines intersections between literature and politics, particularly how rhetoric shapes social reform movements and how American authors engaged with political debates during the pre-Civil War era. His current project, Emerson and the Politics of Equality, explores Ralph Waldo Emerson’s advocacy for equality in response to industrial exploitation, slavery, and early women’s rights movements.
