Dr. Susan P. James is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Colorado State University (CSU). She also serves as Associate Director of the School of Advanced Materials Discovery and founded the School of Biomedical Engineering. Her roles include overseeing faculty support and teaching excellence across the university.
Education: PhD in Polymer Science and Technology from MIT (1993), B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University (1989).
Research focuses on biomedical engineering applications of polymeric materials, including orthopedic implants, cardiovascular devices, regenerative medicine, and hyaluronan-enhanced plastics. Notable inventions include BioPoly materials for knee implants and collaborative work on heart valve prostheses.
Awards include National Academy of Inventors Fellow (2020), Oliver P. Pennock Award (2009/2008), and multiple teaching/service distinctions.
Engaged in service via Faculty Council, CSU President’s Commission on Women and Gender Equity, and outreach programs to inspire young women in engineering. Collaborates internationally, including a sabbatical at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
