Susan Maslan

Susan Maslan is an Associate Professor in the Department of French at the University of California, Berkeley, with affiliations to the Center for Jewish Studies. Her work bridges early modern French literary, political, and social history, focusing on theater, the French Revolution, and human rights.

Research Interests:

• 17th- and 18th-century French theater
• French Revolution and Enlightenment
• Human rights and political subjectivity
• Biopolitics and servitude
• Judaism in early modern French literature

Selected Publications explore themes such as social bonds in revolutionary drama, affect in political representation, and the intersection of Judaism and theatrical personae. Her book Revolutionary Acts: Theater, Democracy, and the French Revolution (2005) remains a key contribution to revolutionary theater studies.
