Dr. Sunita Ramesh is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University, where she established the Transport Physiology and Signalling research group in 2020. She holds an adjunct position at the University of Adelaide and has built a distinguished career spanning over two decades in plant molecular physiology, with a recent expansion into cancer biology focusing on brain cancer mechanisms.
Dr. Ramesh completed her PhD at the University of Adelaide investigating 'Molecular Mechanisms of Zinc Uptake and Regulation in Cereals.' After her 2002 PhD completion, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Plant Research Centre at the Waite Campus. In 2017, she began teaching part-time at the University of Adelaide's School of Biomedicine while continuing her plant-focused research, which eventually led to her groundbreaking discovery that GABA functions as a stress signal in plants.
Her research program encompasses two major interdisciplinary themes: Food Security and Human Health. Under Food Security, her group investigates membrane proteins and signaling cascades to improve crop abiotic stress tolerance, with particular focus on gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling in plants. Her work explores how GABA, which dramatically increases under stress conditions like drought and salinity, helps plants cope with adverse environments. Her team also studies plant-soil-microbe interactions, particularly how root exudates attract beneficial microbes or deter pathogens, and how water stress impacts symbiotic relationships between rhizobia and crop plants.
In the Human Health domain, Dr. Ramesh focuses on limiting the invasiveness of Glioblastoma tumor cells. Her research targets ion channels and transporters involved in cell motility, seeking novel natural compounds to limit brain cancer invasiveness. This work is particularly significant given Glioblastoma's poor prognosis, with only 15 months survival in adults post-diagnosis. Rather than focusing on tumor cell death, her approach targets cell motility mechanisms to prevent tumor invasion into healthy tissues.
Dr. Ramesh's recent publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary trajectory, increasingly focusing on microbial communities in arid environments, drought resilience mechanisms, and the application of membrane transport knowledge to cancer biology. Her work bridges plant stress physiology and oncology, creating unique cross-disciplinary insights that address both food security challenges and human health issues.
