About
Dr. Bo Xu is an ARC Grant-Funded Researcher (B) at the University of Adelaide's School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. He holds an affiliation with the Plant Research Centre at the Waite campus. His research focuses on ion transport mechanisms, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling, and calcium (Ca²⁺) signaling in plant stress physiology. Dr. Xu's work has uncovered groundbreaking insights into GABA's role as a signaling molecule in plants, including its regulation of stomatal opening and interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS). He has also identified key salt tolerance mechanisms in wheat and discovered novel calcium sensors linked to plant growth and disease resistance.
His current research aims to refine cell-specific GABA signaling and membrane ion transport to enhance water-use efficiency and carbon gain in crops under climatic stress. Dr. Xu is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students in molecular biology, plant physiology, and biotechnology. His methodologies include molecular biology, electrophysiology, and computational tools like StomaAI for automated stomatal analysis.
Dr. Xu's contributions have led to improved wheat cultivars for salinity tolerance and advanced tools for plant phenotyping. His research bridges fundamental plant biology with agricultural applications, addressing global challenges in food security and climate resilience.
