Riitta Suhonen is a Professor in Nursing Science at the University of Turku since 2016, specializing in Gerontological Nursing Science. She serves as Director of the Doctoral Programme in Nursing Science (DPNurs) and Vice Head of the Department of Nursing Science. Additionally, she holds a part-time Director of Nursing role at Turku University Hospital. Her academic career includes prior professorships and associate professorships at the University of Turku (2008–2016).
- Leadership: Research program leader for 'Older Individuals' Health, Nursing and Services' and co-lead of 'Ethics in healthcare practice and education'
- Research: Principal investigator for the Individualized Care Project (2002–present), resulting in the Individualised Care Scale adopted in 30+ countries
- Education: Responsible for gerontological nursing courses and international research methodology courses (CIDI Clinical Instruments)
Her work focuses on gerontological nursing, individualized care, healthcare ethics, and management. Recent articles address pandemic ethics (2025), nurse well-being (2025), and home care for older adults (2024). Awards include the Order of the White Rose (2020) and leadership roles in the European Academy of Nursing Science. She has supervised 11 PhDs and currently mentors 20 PhD candidates.
