About
Dr Stuart McDonald is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of Fluid Biomarker Research in the Department of Neuroscience at Monash University. He leads the Monash Trauma Group, focusing on improving clinical management of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) through blood biomarker research. His work explores interactions between injured brain systems and peripheral body systems, emphasizing translational research in mild TBI.
Education: PhD in Neuroscience, La Trobe University (2012). External position: Honorary Associate at La Trobe University.
Research focuses on concussion, TBI biomarkers, neuroinflammation, neurofilament light, and microRNAs. Key projects include INFORMED (concussion management in sports), biomarkers in alcohol/drug-influenced TBI, and head impact kinematics in Australian football. Collaborations span international teams and involve clinical and experimental studies.
Labs/Teams: Monash Trauma Group and SIMOA facilities. Active in over 10 research projects (2021–2026) addressing biomarker development, injury mechanisms, and clinical applications. Publications emphasize blood-based biomarkers, neuroinflammation, and TBI outcomes.
