Sandy Shultz is a Professor and Group Leader in the Department of Neuroscience within the School of Translational Medicine at Monash University, based at the Van Cleef Centre for Nervous Diseases. His research is dedicated to understanding traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion, and post-traumatic epilepsy, with a strong emphasis on pathophysiological mechanisms, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic development.
His research interests center on traumatic brain injury, neuroinflammation, biomarkers, and translational neuroscience. He employs both preclinical rodent models and clinical studies to investigate the neurological consequences of trauma, including intimate partner violence-related brain injury and perinatal trauma. His work integrates neuroimaging, molecular biology, and behavioral analysis to uncover mechanisms and potential treatments.
The recent articles highlight a consistent focus on TBI and its complications, including the impact of infections like Toxoplasma gondii on brain injury outcomes, structural brain changes in chronic TBI, and the development of diagnostic and rehabilitation strategies for concussion.
