Stuart Kaufman is a Professor of Political Science & International Relations at the University of Delaware's College of Arts & Sciences. He joined in 2004, previously teaching at the University of Kentucky and serving on the US National Security Council staff. His research focuses on ethnic conflict, international security, and political psychology, informed by fieldwork in Georgia, Moldova, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa, and Tanzania. He also serves annually as Professorial Lecturer at Vienna's Diplomatic Academy.
Educated at the University of Michigan (PhD, 1991), Kaufman’s work emphasizes understanding the psychological and symbolic drivers of violence, particularly in ethnopolitical contexts. His notable books include *Nationalist Passions* (2015) and co-edited *The Balance of Power in World History* (2007). He has received prestigious awards like the Fulbright Scholarship (2011) and the Robert E. Lane Award for his contributions to political psychology.
Teaching spans international security, US foreign policy, and Russian politics. His research explores narratives of fear, historical grievances, and reconciliation strategies, with recent work examining civil war risks in the US and conflict dynamics in South Africa and the Caucasus.
