Dr. Stuart Cunningham is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield within the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery, specifically in the Human Communication Sciences department. His research focuses on robust automatic speech recognition, auditory-inspired speech representations, and the application of speech technology in assistive technology and speech therapy.
He previously held positions as a Research Associate in both the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at Barnsley Hospital. Dr. Cunningham earned a BEng in Software Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield.
His current projects include the development of speech therapy tools through articulation therapy (collaborating with Mark Hawley, Peter Cudd, Rebecca Palmer, and Pam Enderby) and the CloudCAST initiative, a cloud-based platform for remote speech technology applications. His work spans collaborations with the School of Health and Related Research, the Department of Computer Science, and the British Society of Audiology.
Dr. Cunningham's publications emphasize speech recognition for dysarthria, speech signal processing, and assistive technology design, with significant contributions to synthetic voice personalization, speech-enabled environmental control, and acoustic analysis of speech impairments. His work includes partnerships with institutions like the University of Edinburgh and NIHR i4i programme.
