Stuart A. Lipton is a Professor and Step Family Foundation Endowed Chair at The Scripps Research Institute, with joint appointments in Neuroscience and the Skaggs Graduate School. He is a renowned expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and is best known for developing the FDA-approved drug memantine and discovering protein S-nitrosylation. His research focuses on synaptic protection, redox signaling pathways, and translational drug development using human iPSC-derived models and 3D cerebral organoids. Dr. Lipton holds positions at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine, and has received over 150 awards including the Ernst Jung Prize and multiple Nobel Symposium invitations.
Education: MD/PhD from University of Pennsylvania (1977), B.A. from Cornell University (1971). Professional highlights include 20+ years at Harvard Medical School, founding directorship of a neuroscience center in 2000, and pioneering work linking MEF2C transcription factor to autism and neurodegenerative disorders. His lab employs chemical biology, electrophysiology, and neurobehavioral paradigms to combat diseases like ALS, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder, and vascular dementia.
Awards include the Redox Pioneer Award (2013), Society for Redox Biology & Medicine Discovery Award (2023), and Congressional recognition for memantine development. His 150+ h-index reflects over 1,500 publications spanning Alzheimer’s mechanisms, S-nitrosylation networks, and drug candidates like NitroSynapsin.
