About
Steven R. McGreevy serves as an Assistant Professor of Institutional Rurban Sustainability Studies within the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability (CSTM) at the University of Twente's Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS). His interdisciplinary work bridges environmental sociology with practical sustainability applications.
McGreevy's research focuses on sustainable bioregional revitalization, sustainable agrifood transitions, and post-growth food systems. He examines how to reconnect food consumption and production patterns through policy interventions and practical implementation. A distinctive aspect of his methodology involves using simulation and serious gaming as tools for sustainability education and governance, creating interactive learning environments that foster systems thinking.
His work demonstrates strong connections between theoretical frameworks and practical applications, particularly through the FEAST Project which he led at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Japan. This project analyzed food consumption patterns, food-related social practices, and conducted food system mapping across national, regional, and local contexts. The project has since evolved into a non-profit organization continuing research to solve environmental and social problems.
McGreevy is a founding member and co-chair of the Future Earth Knowledge-Action Network on Systems of Sustainable Consumption and Production, demonstrating his leadership in global sustainability networks. His background includes 18 years of professional experience in Japan following completion of his D.Ag from Kyoto University in 2012.
His interdisciplinary approach combines social sciences with practical sustainability applications, particularly focusing on food governance transformation. McGreevy collaborates with diverse stakeholders to vision plausible futures and initiate food citizenship-oriented experiments and actions that address environmental and social challenges through transdisciplinary efforts.
