About
Dr. Steven Patterson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. His research focuses on diabetes and pancreatic beta cell function, with particular expertise in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, insulin secretion, and the role of microRNA in beta cell lipid metabolism.
Dr. Patterson's research interests include:
- Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 and its analogues
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus pathogenesis and treatment
- Pancreatic beta cell function and survival
- Lipid metabolism in beta cells
- MicroRNA regulation in diabetes
- Diabetic complications, including retinopathy
Dr. Patterson has published 31 research outputs with an h-index of 15 and 771 citations. His recent work (2021-2025) shows continued focus on pancreatic beta cell function, with studies on spexin analogues, microRNA, and protection against glucolipotoxicity. His research demonstrates a strong translational focus, connecting molecular mechanisms to potential clinical applications in diabetes treatment.
Notable projects include:
- Principal Investigator on a Wellcome Trust project (2019) targeting thyroid hormone receptor beta to enhance MafA expression in pancreatic beta cells
- Co-investigator on research into stress hormone metabolism as an anti-fibrotic therapeutic pathway for chronic wounds (2019)
Dr. Patterson actively participates in the diabetes research community, including presenting at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Annual Meeting in 2013.
