Steven Kerrigan

Prof. Steven Kerrigan is a Full Professor and Deputy Head of Research at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. He leads the Cardiovascular Infection Research Group (part of the Irish Centre of Vascular Biology) and serves as Chief Scientific Officer at Inthelia Therapeutics, a RCSI spin-out company. His academic journey includes roles from Lecturer (2008) to Professor (2021), with postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.

Education: B.Sc. (Hons) Pharmacology (King’s College London, 1996), M.Sc. Immunopharmacology (University of Strathclyde, 1997), Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Infection (RCSI, 2001).

Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions in sepsis, infective endocarditis, and osteomyelitis. Key interests include vascular endothelium dysfunction, integrin signaling, and therapeutic development using nanotechnology and biomaterials. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Health) and 9 (Innovation).

Awards include the 2023 Science Foundation Ireland Commercialization Award, 2024 International Future Health Summit Innovation Award, and multiple fellowships. He has authored 90+ publications (h-index 36, ~6,000 citations) and filed 11 patents. Grants include funding from SFI, Enterprise Ireland, and the British Heart Foundation.

Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Pharmacology, with supervision of 22 PhD students and 79 undergraduates. Administrative roles include co-chairing the ISTH Scientific Standardization Committee and membership in the Royal Irish Academy’s Life Sciences Committee.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Cardiovascular Infection Research Group and collaborates with Inthelia Therapeutics on translational vascular therapies.
