Steven D. Kale is a Professor of History at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1987). His research focuses on modern French history, particularly conservative ideology, social and political life of 19th-century elites, and postwar Europe. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in 19th-century Europe, modern France, and postwar European history.
Key publications include Legitimism and the Reconstruction of French Society, 1852–1883 (1992) and French Salons: High Society and Political Sociability from the Old Regime to the Revolution of 1848 (2004). He is currently working on a book exploring transnational intellectual exchanges in French history (1800–1900). His work has appeared in journals such as French Historical Studies, French History, and Modern Intellectual History.
