Steve Rabson

Steve Rabson is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Mary Washington, specializing in Japanese language, history, society, and culture.

He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages from Harvard University (1979), a Master's in Japanese Literature from Sophia University (Tokyo, 1973), and a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Michigan (1965). He previously taught Japanese language and literature at Brown University for thirty years.

His research and publications focus on Japanese literature, particularly Okinawan literature, cultural identity, and historical memory. Key works include Okinawa: Two Postwar Novellas (1988, 1996), Righteous Cause or Tragic Folly: Changing Views of War in Modern Japanese Poetry (1998), Southern Exposure: Modern Japanese Literature from Okinawa (2000), and The Okinawan Diaspora in Japan: Crossing the Borders Within (2012). His 2022 book Training and Deployment of America's Nuclear Cold Warriors in Asia: Keepers of Armageddon explores military history and Cold War studies.
