Dustin Wright is an Associate Professor of Japanese Culture and Language and Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at California State University, Monterey Bay. He specializes in the history of anti-military base movements in post-war Japan, particularly the Sunagawa Struggle and Koza Uprising. His research bridges social movements, U.S. military presence in Asia, and cultural history.
Education: B.A. in International Affairs (Northern Arizona University), M.A. in Asian Studies (San Diego State University), M.A. and Ph.D. in History (UC Santa Cruz).
Research interests include Okinawan resistance, Cold War militarism, and the intersection of food studies with colonial history. He leads the Okinawa Memories Initiative, a public history project documenting grassroots narratives.
Key publications include his forthcoming book *Protest Nation* and articles in *Gastronomica*, *Critical Asian Studies*, and *The Sixties*. Awards include the Fulbright-Hays Fellowship and UCSC teaching awards.
Teaching focuses on modern Japanese history, East Asian studies, and food cultures. He has held visiting roles at Connecticut College and UCSC, and conducted fieldwork in Okinawa and Tokyo.
