Stephen Shute

Stephen Shute is Professor of Criminal Law & Criminal Justice at the University of Sussex's School of Law, Politics and Sociology. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Resources, he oversees university-wide strategy for resources, innovation, and sustainability.

His research focuses on criminal justice systems, including parole decision-making, risk assessment of offenders, and criminal justice inspection frameworks. His work has directly influenced UK policy reforms, including the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997 and parole board practices.

Shute's publications critically examine parole board culture, preventive detention, and inspection methodologies. His recent work analyzes systemic trust issues in parole systems through high-profile case studies.
