Stephen Rockel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto. He specializes in African history with a focus on East Africa, Southern Africa, and the Indian Ocean region. His research encompasses social and cultural history, labor systems, slavery, urbanization, colonialism, environmental history, and war's societal impacts.
Education: M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Previously taught at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.
Research interests include African social history, labor movements, slavery dynamics, colonial urbanization, and the intersection of war and society. Current projects involve publishing life histories of enslaved Africans, studying 19th-century East African slave trade, and researching the history of Tabora, Tanzania.
- Received Joel Gregory Prize for Carriers of Culture (2006/2007)
Future projects include research on East Africa's experience during the First World War.
