Sean Hawkins is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, based at University College. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
His research focuses on the social and cultural history of sub-Saharan Africa, examining identity, political authority, religion, medicine, colonial law, marriage, and Western perceptions of Africa. Current projects investigate the history of slavery, race, kinship, animals, and the African diaspora, while also highlighting Africa's contributions to Western concepts of freedom.
Hawkins has authored significant books on African colonial encounters and diaspora experiences. His publications consistently explore themes of colonialism, cultural exchange, and African agency within imperial systems.
