Stephen Downes is Professor and Chair of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London's Department of Music. He previously served as Head of Music at Royal Holloway (twice), Deputy Head of School of Arts at University of Surrey, and Director of the Institute of Musical Research (2017-20). His research focuses on 19th/20th-century music analysis, marginalized repertoires, and Eastern European music (especially Polish composers like Chopin, Szymanowski, and Górecki).
