Stephen Coombs

Stephen Coombs is a Lecturer in Piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with extensive teaching experience at institutions like the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has served as an External Assessor for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. His career spans over decades as a renowned British pianist, soloist, and collaborator in chamber music, duo piano, and song accompaniment.

Educated at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music under Gordon Green, Coombs has performed globally, broadcasting extensively for the BBC. He is celebrated for his recordings with Hyperion Records, including works by Glazunov, Debussy, and Milhaud. Notable achievements include organizing the Pianoworks International Piano Festival (2000), which earned a Sony Radio Academy Award.

Coombs champions contemporary composers, premiering works by British composers such as Paul Barker and Michael Finnissy. He co-founded the Room-Music ensemble, specializing in French and Russian repertoire, and has been an ensemble-in-residence at St. John’s, Smith Square, London.
