Professor Stephen Brett is Professor of Critical Care in the Department of Surgery & Cancer at the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, and a consultant in intensive care medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He leads patient-focused projects across the entire patient journey in surgery and critical illness, including epidemiology, public health, clinical trials, and technology evaluation.
His research interests center on long-term outcomes after critical illness. He is chief investigator for multiple clinical studies and led the NICE guideline development group for "Rehabilitation after Critical Illness". Recent projects explore human factors, organisational psychology, medical decision-making, and machine-learning applications in community risk prediction. He also serves on trial steering groups and data monitoring committees for external clinical trials.
Professor Brett has held significant roles including past President of the Intensive Care Society and previous Editor of Critical Care. He is affiliated with the Artificial Intelligence Network and the section of Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care, and has provided consultancy to industry and advisory services to the Department of Health.
