Associate Professor · Gynecologic Oncology
Washington University in St. LouisAbout
Dr. Stephanie Markovina is an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She holds multiple affiliations including the Division of Cancer Biology, Roy and Diana Vagelos Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences (DBBS), Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), Bursky Center for Human Immunology & Immunotherapy Programs (CHiiPs), and Siteman Cancer Center. She practices clinically at Siteman Cancer Center – South County and Center for Advanced Medicine Radiation Oncology Center, with hospital privileges at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Her educational background includes a BS in Biology from Washington University (2001), PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from University of Wisconsin Madison (2008), MD from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health (2011), and Radiation Oncology Residency at Washington University School of Medicine (2015).
Dr. Markovina specializes in gynecologic oncology, thyroid cancer, anal cancer and brachytherapy, with research focused on cancer biology. Her work spans cervical cancer biology, tumor immunology, radiation therapy mechanisms, and biomarker discovery. She has made significant contributions to understanding how SERPINB3 affects tumor response to treatment, how HPV expression influences cancer outcomes, and how to improve radiation therapy techniques for gynecologic cancers.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on cervical cancer treatment optimization, with particular attention to biomarkers, tumor microenvironment, and resistance mechanisms. Her work combines molecular biology, imaging techniques, and clinical outcomes research to develop more effective treatment approaches. She has also contributed to thyroid cancer guidelines and ovarian cancer treatment protocols.
Dr. Markovina is actively involved in mentoring PhD and MSTP students and has demonstrated commitment to advancing cancer research through her extensive publication record. Her work has been cited over 2,300 times according to available metrics.
Her laboratory and research team focuses on understanding mechanisms of radiation resistance in gynecologic cancers, particularly cervical cancer, with emphasis on the role of serpins, tumor microenvironment, and immune responses. This work has important implications for developing strategies to overcome treatment resistance.
