Stephanie Boluk is Associate Professor in Cinema and Digital Media and English at UC Davis. She holds a PhD from the University of Florida and researches game studies, metagaming, digital humanities, and electronic literature. Her work examines how players repurpose games through glitches, mods, and critical play.
Boluk co-authored Metagaming (2017), analyzing how games extend beyond screens into practices like speedrunning and e-sports. Her artistic projects include interactive installations such as Field Notes and video essays like Echo exploring border politics.
Her articles investigate procedural histories in games like Dwarf Fortress, anamorphic art, and zombie narratives as critiques of capitalism. Recent work analyzes comic strip seriality in Blondie and disciplinary formation in game studies.
Boluk co-hosts the Every Game in this City podcast and advises students in experimental media and critical design.
