Stephan Zweifel

Stephan Zweifel is a Professor of Biology at Carleton College, where he has held a faculty position since 1991. He also serves as the Head Coach of the men’s tennis team, blending academic and athletic leadership.

Dr. Zweifel’s research focuses on the replication and segregation of mitochondrial DNA in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with an emphasis on identifying nuclear genes essential for mitochondrial genome transmission. He teaches courses in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Behavioral Genetics, including a seminar and laboratory sections.

His academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Washington. His office is located in Goodsell Observatory 105, and he teaches both foundational and advanced courses such as BIOL 125 (Genes, Evolution & Development), BIOL 240/241 (Genetics and Laboratory), and BIOL 394 (Directed Research in Biology).
