Michael Schweizer

Michael Schweizer is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. He holds a DSc from the University of Erlangen and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB). His research focuses on molecular nutrition, DNA replication fidelity, and metabolic pathways in yeast, particularly Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Notably, he investigates the role of PRPP synthetase in cell wall integrity and its implications for human health.

Education: Earned a diploma (MSc) in Biology from the University of Würzburg and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Erlangen. Postdoctoral work at the University of Georgia, USA, involved pioneering yeast genetics research.

Research Interests: Molecular mechanisms linking metabolism and cell signaling, with emphasis on PRPP synthesis and its impact on cell integrity. Contributions include studies on yeast genetics, metabolic networking, and the application of model organisms to human health challenges.

Publications: Over 100 articles, including recent work on PRS gene functions, cell wall integrity signaling, and PRPP metabolism's role in neuropathies. His 2024 paper proposes a hypothesis linking PRS gene products to dual roles in PRPP synthesis and cell wall maintenance.

Awards: DSc (University of Erlangen), FRSB (2020), and leadership roles in research initiatives, including directing the School of Life Sciences' research program (2002–2007).
