Stephan Schmidt

Stephan Schmidt is the F.C.P. Professor and Certara Endowed Professor in Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida's College of Pharmacy, serving as Director of the Center for Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology. He holds a B.S. in Pharmacy from Friedrich-Alexander University (Germany) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Florida. His research focuses on mechanism/physiologically-based drug-disease trial models for antimicrobial chemotherapy, chronic diseases, and drug interactions, resulting in over 160 peer-reviewed articles, textbooks, and book chapters. He has received multiple awards, including the Tanabe Young Investigator Award (2016) and the University of Florida Research Foundation Professor Award (2023).

Dr. Schmidt teaches advanced courses in pharmacometrics, quantitative pharmacology, and clinical drug modeling. He serves as section editor for the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. His work integrates pharmacokinetic modeling, systems pharmacology, and clinical trial simulation to address unmet therapeutic needs, particularly in personalized medicine and drug development. Recent initiatives include developing digital platforms for patient-driven drug models and optimizing treatments for Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, and tuberculosis.

Key contributions include the fifth edition of Rowland and Tozer’s Clinical Pharmacokinetics textbook, influential PBPK models for statins and antimicrobials, and frameworks for detecting prescribing cascades. His grants and collaborations span academia, industry, and regulatory bodies, emphasizing translational research and global pharmacometrics education. Current projects include optimizing CRISPR-Cas therapies, improving lactation drug exposure models, and advancing model-informed precision dosing (MIPD).
