Prof. Dr. Stefan Troebst is a retired Professor at the University of Leipzig, holding academic roles since 1999 in the Faculty of Philology and later the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy. He served as Deputy Director of the GWZO (Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies) from 1999 to 2021. His expertise spans modern history, cultural studies, and Eastern European studies, with a focus on conflict history, memory cultures, and post-Wende collective identities.
- Education: Studied history, Slavic studies, and political science across institutions including Free University of Berlin, Indiana University Bloomington, and others.
- Habilitation: Completed with a study on Swedish-Moscow relations (1617–1661).
Research interests include international law formation, ethno-political conflicts, and Armenian communities in Eastern Europe. He has led major projects like the SFB 1199 on globalization and spatial processes. Awards include the DFG Heisenberg Fellowship and fellowships with international academies.
- Editorial Roles: Co-editor of journals such as EGO – European History Online and Comparativ.
- Political Engagement: Served in CSCE missions, advised the International Commission on the Balkans, and founded the Danish-German European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI).
He directs the European Studies Master’s program at Leipzig's Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) and holds leadership roles in academic councils and foundations.
