Stefan Markowski

Dr. Stefan Markowski is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, specializing in defense economics, procurement systems, and migration studies. With a career spanning over five decades, he has established himself as a leading expert in defense policy with a focus on small country perspectives.

His educational background includes mathematical economics at the University of Warsaw, where he completed his Masters thesis in transport economics in 1966. He later earned his doctorate in economics from the London School of Economics in 1974. His professional journey includes positions at the Centre for Environmental Studies in London, South Bank Polytechnic, and the Bureau of Industry Economics in Canberra before joining UNSW@ADFA in 1988.

Dr. Markowski's research focuses on private military companies, small arms proliferation, defense procurement, industry policies and trade, and international mobility of factors of production. His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly contributions to defense economics and migration studies. Recent work shows particular emphasis on Indo-Pacific security dynamics, including analyses of the AUKUS agreement, military expenditure patterns, and defense procurement systems across multiple countries.

He currently serves as a Visiting Professor at the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw, leading a European Commission-funded research project on migration flows east of the European Union. He also holds an adjunct position at the Australian National University's Centre for European Studies, reflecting his ongoing engagement with European defense and migration policy issues.

His scholarly contributions include numerous books, edited volumes, and journal articles that have shaped understanding of defense economics, particularly in small nations and the Asia-Pacific region. His work often bridges academic research and practical policy applications, informed by his extensive consulting experience with organizations including ACIL Tasman and Unisearch.
