About
Stanton Ching serves as the Margaret W. Kelly Professor of Chemistry at Connecticut College, where he has been a dedicated faculty member since 1990. He teaches across the chemistry curriculum from introductory to advanced courses while maintaining an active research program that prominently features undergraduate researchers.
Education:
- B.A., Pomona College
- Ph.D., Northwestern University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of North Carolina
Professor Ching's research focuses on inorganic materials chemistry, specifically developing novel synthetic routes to porous nanostructured manganese oxides and investigating their catalytic properties. His work bridges fundamental science with practical applications in heterogeneous catalysis, environmental remediation of toxic waste, and rechargeable battery technology. These manganese oxide compounds occur naturally in diverse environments including soils, marine sediments, manganese nodules, and desert rock varnish. His research approach actively integrates Connecticut College undergraduates who contribute meaningfully to discoveries, frequently resulting in student presentations at professional conferences and co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications.
Ching's research program has secured competitive funding from the Research Corporation, American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, and National Science Foundation. He has served as Chemistry Department Chair and has been secretary to the editorial board for the Inorganic Syntheses series since 1999. Beyond his academic roles, Professor Ching maintains a significant commitment to athletics at Connecticut College, having served as Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA since 1994 and holding leadership positions including Interim Director of Athletics (2002-2003) and member of the NCAA Division III Management Council (2011-2014).
