Research Focus
Dr. Kirk's research examines how physical activity and nutrition interventions improve learning outcomes in preschool children, particularly those at risk for developmental delays. Her work demonstrates that integrating 60 minutes of physical activity into daily academic lessons boosts literacy skills and reduces obesity in Head Start programs, with significant impacts on African American children and gender-specific learning patterns.
Publications
Her 8 most recent publications (2010-2015) focus exclusively on physical activity integration in preschool education. Research consistently shows that movement-based academic lessons enhance literacy, narrow achievement gaps, and improve health metrics. Studies frequently analyze Head Start programs and emphasize practical applications for early childhood educators.
Professional Engagement
Dr. Kirk presents regularly at national conferences and maintains active involvement in professional organizations. She has led multiple grants as Principal Investigator and collaborates with researchers across institutions. While no lab is specified, her work influences curriculum design in early childhood education nationally.
