Soojong Kim

Soojong Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Davis. He is affiliated with the Computational Communication Lab and the Computational Social Science Designated Emphasis program. Previously, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and earned his PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on computational methods to study societal inequality, algorithmic bias, and health communication. He currently serves as Secretary of the Computational Methods Division of the International Communication Association (ICA) and organizes the ICA Hackathon.

Kim’s research explores how technology impacts social equity, including AI-driven inequality, misinformation ecosystems, and health discourse. His work has been published in journals like International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Health Psychology, and Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction. Recent projects analyze AI’s role in perpetuating bias, the emotional drivers of social media engagement (e.g., 'rage bait' vs. informational content), and computational methods to predict and counteract health misinformation.

He collaborates with scholars globally, including on studies of vaccine sentiment analysis, racial disparities in algorithmic perception, and public health interventions. His team includes graduate and undergraduate students at UC Davis and international partners. Kim’s work bridges computational tools with sociological inquiry, emphasizing ethical technology design and equitable digital practices.
