Sonja Puntscher-Riekmann

Sonja Puntscher-Riekmann is a Research Fellow at the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) at the University of Salzburg, where she previously served as a full professor of Political Theory and European Politics until her retirement in 2019. She holds the title of Emeritus Professor (Univ.-Prof. i. R.) and currently leads research initiatives focused on European integration, EU institutional development, and democratic theory.

She has held significant administrative roles, including Vice Rector for International Relations (2003–2011) and Director of the Institute for European Integration Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2002–2008). Her professional network includes leadership in the European Forum Alpbach and membership in the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Board.

Her research emphasizes EU fiscal integration, parliamentary systems, and constitutionalism. Notably, she coordinated the Horizon 2020 project EMUchoices on member states’ preferences for economic integration. She has taught at universities in Vienna, Innsbruck, Florence, and Berlin.
