Sonia Rupcic is a Visiting Scholar in Gender, Sexuality & Women's Studies at the University of Pittsburgh and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Brown University's Population Studies and Training Center. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Michigan (2020), an MPH from Columbia University (2011), and a BA from the University of Chicago (2004). Her research focuses on intersections of sex/gender, medical humanitarianism, and carceral politics in South Africa and the US.
Her current book project examines how survivors of sexual violence in post-apartheid South Africa engage with medico-legal systems through the lens of legal pluralism. Research interests include transnational feminisms, medical anthropology, and the anthropology of law.
Publications span comparative studies of justice systems and ethnographic analyses of NGO advocacy. She has over 15 years of fieldwork experience in survivor advocacy in both South Africa and the US.
